“Big Things” from Small Australian Towns

We all know that Australia itself is a massive country… but it is also home to massive “things”. From animals and fruits to absolute randomness, Australia has over 150 “Big Things”.

Surprisingly, these tourist traps do have a story behind them and do attract visitors. Some backpackers even make it their own personal mission to visit them all whilst traveling around Oz!

Some of my favorite are the Big Bench and the Big Wine Bottle . But some are just freaky. Who needs to see a Big Spider? Or who thought of the Big Potato!? And seriously, the Big Koala just takes all the cuteness out of the iconic little bear. In fact, I find it quite scary.

The Big [Evil] Koala

The Big (and very fat) Merino

The Big Banana, which according to their website is Australia’s most famous icon… not the Opera House or Ayers Rock.. but a Big Banana!

The Big Golf Ball. With a weird smiley face.

The Big Peanut. With a creepy smiley face too.

And the Big Dead Fish. There were plenty of normal Big Fish around the country so 10 out of 10 for originality!

Personally, I think Australia has enough beautiful beaches and breathtaking sceneries, even in the outback. So Big Things a la American are kind of unecessary! Who can actually tell me a cool story about visiting one of them???

I recently did a post on these “big things” and they are definitely weird. I guess the goal is to draw people off the highway to their attraction or location instead of just driving by. Since there are very few people in rural parts of Australia, they have to do whatever they can! haha
