Do’s and Don’ts for packing your backpack

So you made up your mind and wanna head to the other end of the world. You got your plane tickets, you organized your visa, you know what places to see, and where to party.
Time to start relaxing, right? But did you also think about the biggest task waiting for you before you start travelling? The first step for a great trip begins even before leaving home. With most airlines limiting your luggage to one piece and 20kg, you have to pack carefully. And there are a lot more things to consider than just the weight.
Always ask yourself: Do you really need it? Or are you just used to it? A pile system can help you decide. Form piles with things you really need, things you might need and things you would like to take with you just in case. And then get rid of the “just in case”. And then do it again. Till you got only one little pile left. Don’t forget: As a backpacker you have to carry all that stuff on your own during your whole trip.
So, do you really need your parka on a tropical beach?
Do you want to carry a hairdryer, straightener or laptop to a place that has no electricity? And don’t forget the cables, the chargers, the adapters, or batteries.
And here is a great tip for for all you backpackers out there that will not only save you space in your backpack but also be your best friend. A travel towel is made out of microfibre and is not only light and ultra absorbing, but also anti-bacterial and quick drying.
Even though this may sound a little minimalistic first, don’t be afraid to do it this way. This is part of being a backpacker, and there are thousands of other people doing it every year and having the best time of their live. You don’t need three pairs of trousers, your little black one or a thousand pairs of shoes. Backpacking is about having a good time and getting away from your usual day of life to explore new places and find new friends. You’re not on a runway and you will have to go back to your old life soon enough – and all the others are in the same position as you. And just think about all the souvenirs and gifts you can take home with you if you keep all unnecessary staff at home.
So keep in mind: The key for a well-packed backpack is to know your destination and to know what you need.
