Be swept away reading Sallie’s story of the Kimberley Region. I bet you will want to visit this Australian treasure too!! Or at least pack you bags and leave for an adventurous roadtrip…
“There’s nothing like a road trip and since moving to Darwin 7 months ago, it’s something that I really miss. Darwin’s a long way from anywhere, so I was excited to be setting off in my campervan & heading to Kununurra for Easter.
These road trips make me proud to call Australia home…the landscape, the blue skies and the sunshine and the characters that you meet along the way.
There’s a sense of camaraderie when you take off on a roadtrip. The salute from the steering wheel or the easy conversation with fellow travellers at the servo’s along the way.
When you head off the beaten track in outback Australia, the journey is definitely as exciting as the destination.
I fell in love with the Kimberley region as soon as we hit the outskirts of Kununurra. Gregory National Park set the scene & the rock formations and landscape reminded me of my time in South Africa. There are lots of theories about this and the famous Boab Tree seems to add weight to the debate, but I was just happy to be a passenger & take loads of photo’s, driving my boyfriend mad by asking him to stop the van every few km’s to grab another “amazing photo opportunity”
I’m a huge fan of this part of Australia since discovering it & here’s my top 10 reasons to get out and explore the Kimberley Region:
- Lake Argyle – do the sunset cruise! It’s about $85 but worth it to swim at sunset in an expanse of water 21 times that of Sydney Harbour…oh & you share this lake with 25,000 fresh water crocodiles!
- Lake Argyle Caravan Park – $33 a night for a powered site & the horizon pool with the million dollar views. These shots were one of my most commented photos on facebook!
- Wyndham – Have a drink at the pub & step back in time. Check out the local aboriginals carving pictures into Boab Nuts. They sell for about $25-$30 and are a great souvenir from the region.
- The Boatshed Restaurant – located on Lake Kununurra, the food is fantastic, the building unique & you can check out the fresh water crocs from the veranda
- Boab Trees – because they are cool!
- El Questro – Not all of the waterholes were reopen when we were there, but there are plenty of great walks and swimming holes about 40km into the Gibb River Road
- Camping with your mates – we stayed at the Discovery Big 4 Park on the banks of Lake Kununurra. We pulled up our camper within a couple of metres of the banks and watched the sunrise from the comfort of our “room” every morning!
- Beer…because it’s a compulsory part of any Aussie roadtrip. Best served cold, so make sure you always by ice before the shops/servo close!
- Barra Fishing – I didn’t catch my 1m barra on this trip, but the fishing is great around this region.
- The Vibe….just like they say in The Castle, it’s the vibe of the place!”
See you there!!!!!!
