Several of our Travellers Auto Barn staff members are backpackers and are living in backpacker hostels. We asked them about the pros & cons of living on a day to day basis in hostels …
PROS
- Party Party Party – you can party 24/7 – often including free drinks
- Cultural experience – you get to meet people from all around the world and learn a lot more about each culture
- Social lifestyle – you learn how to become more sociable and improve you social communication skills – invaluable, especially once your backpacker days are over…
- Friends around the world – no comment needed..
CONS:
- Drugs & alcohol – it is fun for the first few weeks but on a daily basis a real concern, epecially if you have to go to work or share rooms with a bunch of party animals
- Lack of privacy – you are surrounded by people 24/7; proper sleep does not exist
- Safety/Space – keeping an eye on your valuables and locking them up all the time can be quite annoying but also the lack of space for your personal stuff can create headaches
- Kitchen issues – dirty sinks or plates are common….not able to cook when you want. And of course, McDonalds is always around with $4.95 meals – and ensuring that non of your pants will fit anymore after a month
- Social behaviour – not everyone is fun & understanadble – waking up to “love” sessions or screaming in the dorms is comon
But no matter how bad some of the experiences were – all of them would do it again and could never consider living in a shared appartment…
