3 Tips for driving your campervan around Melbourne

Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, is one of the most liveable cities in the world. Situated on the large natural bay of Port Phillip, the city boasts a diverse range of things to see and do. From the city centre with its world-famous laneways, to the beaches along the coastline, there’s something for everyone in Melbourne.

If you’re planning on hiring a campervan to explore this great city, here are a few tips to help you get around:

Avoid peak hour traffic

With so much to see and do in Melbourne, it can be tempting to try and pack everything into one day. However, this can be quite overwhelming, especially if you’re driving a campervan around for the first time. Our advice is to take your time and explore one area at a time. This way, you can really take in your surroundings and enjoy the experience.

If you can, try to avoid driving during peak hour traffic. This is usually between 7am and 9am, and then again from 4pm to 6pm. If you can plan your journey outside of these times, you’ll find it much easier to get around.

Electronic tag account to pay for tolls

In Victoria, there are two toll roads: CityLink, which links the Tullamarine and West Gate freeways with the Monash freeway; and EastLink, which links the Eastern and Monash freeways with the Frankston and Peninsula Link freeways. This means that if you’re driving a campervan around Melbourne, chances are you’ll need to use a toll road at some point.

We at Travellers Autobarn will explain to you on pick-up on how we handle toll roads & charges to avoid any financial surprises for our customers.

Use a Sat Nav/GPS system

No matter where you’re coming from or how long you’ve been driving, satellite navigation or a global positioning system is an essential tool for getting around a strange city. This app ensures you will never get lost as you’ll have access to turn-by-turn directions, traffic updates in real-time, and even alternative routes if there’s congestion on your planned route.

If you don’t have a portable GPS system, don’t worry – most smartphones come equipped with a mapping application that can do the same thing. Google Maps, which is compatible with both iOS and Android, is a free GPS program. After installing the app, all you have to do is punch in your coordinates and off you go.
