Frequently Asked Questions: Rentals

Q: Where can I find all the information I need and how can I contact Travellers Auto Barn?

A: Our website provides comprehensive information about travelling with Travellers Auto Barn rental vehicles. You are most welcome to contact our friendly and professional sales and reservation staff by email, fax or telephone. If you have special requirements or need specific advice or assistance, we would be happy to help you with relevant information. All e-mails are responded to within 24 hours

Q: Do I need a special license?

A: A valid current car driver's license is to be produced for everyone intending to drive the vehicle on the tour. State, overseas or international drivers licenses are acceptable. A translation of you license may be required in English characters for our staff to read.

Q: How many people can travel in each vehicle?

A: Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers in Australia. The number of passengers depends on the number of seat belts - which depends on the vehicle. The number of passengers is indicated for each rental vehicle in the rentals section of this website.

Q: Can a child seat be fitted?

A: Child seats can only be fitted in certain models. Travellers Auto Barn can provide a child seat that complies with local laws. You must inform Travellers Auto Barn at the time of the booking if a child seat will be used in the vehicle, whether or not you provide your own, so that the appropriate installations can be made.

Q: Can we just pull over on the side of the road?

A: Outside of towns and in country areas it is allowed, but because of local council laws you are not permitted to camp on the side of the road in towns. Australia has an extensive network of caravan parks in all major tourist centres and in most towns. They offer excellent recreation facilities and of course have superb shower and toilet amenities. They also have provision for you to plug the vehicle into electricity. There is ordinarily no need to book ahead, even in peak periods. The approximate cost is $15 to $20 a night.

Q: How do I get to the Travellers Auto Barn Depot?

A: Pick up and return of vehicles is at our depots (not airports). Our depots are close to the airports. On return of the vehicle it is your responsibility to make your way to your next destination.

Q: How much does petrol cost?

A: If you're coming from Europe, you'll find our petrol prices quite affordable. Unleaded fuel is currently around $1.30/litre in populated areas, and leaded and diesel are each within $.05. In more remote areas, petrol prices do rise and they follow the laws of supply and demand. However, even in the most remote areas it's still about half price when compared to European prices.

Q: How old do I have to be to rent?

A: The minimum age for all drivers is 18, the maximum age is 75 years.

Q: How does the Bond/Excess on a rental vehicles work?

A: Each rental vehicle requires a Bond that is also the insurance excess for that vehicle. The amount of the Bond is decided by you, and must be done with a credit card. Your credit card is pre-authorized for the appropriate amount when you pick up the vehicle. If the vehicle is returned in good condition and a full tank of fuel, the Bond is then released.

Q: How can I pay for my rental?

A: All payments must be made in Australian dollars and we except cash, bank cheques, travellers cheques and credit cards.
