Some Info on Melbourne!
Melbourne is perhaps the most 'European' of Australia's cities: it has a certain style and charm that you won't find anywhere else. Locals will tell you that it is the most stylish of Australia's cities, famous for its restaurants, fashion and ber cool nightclub scene. Perhaps because it doesn't have Sydney's beaches, Melbourne has more than made up for it with it's alternative entertainment.
Check out the pubs in Fitzroy and St Kilda for great local music: Melbourne has produced some of the most influential Australian bands over the last decade. While Sydney's band scene stagnated in the late '90's with the infiltration of the dreaded poker machines into most pubs, alternative music continued to thrive in Melbourne...grab a gig guide when you arrive and you will be amazed at the quality and diversity of the live music scene down here.
If you are in Melbourne over the winter, then you really should head to the 'footy' at least once: this is the essential Melbourne experience. Get on down to the MCG (or 'The G' as the locals call it) and watch the big men fly in a game of Aussie Rules. It doesn't matter if you don't understand the rules, just have a beer and scream out "BALL!" every once in a while and you will soon find yourself in the swing of things...With crowds routinely topping the 60,000 mark, it is an exhilarating afternoons entertainment.
There are a couple of beaches in Melbourne, but the real seaside delights are just out of the city.
Bells Beach, the location of one of the great Pro Surfing tour events is just a short drive from the city and -winter or summer- is a great spot to visit, particularly if the surf is pumping!
Also within driving distance are a number of other specatcular spots to visit: The Great Ocean Road - one of the truly outstanding drives in the world, Phillip Island, the wineyards of the Yarra Valley if you are partial to a drop and Melbourne is, of course, the Gateway to Tasmania...
This is just a small sample of the many and varied types of activities and entertainment you will find in Melbourne. Whatever your plans are, allow an extra 4 or 5 days to explore Melbourne once you get here, because once you have arrived you will not be in any hurry to leave.
