How to save on petrol costs in Australia: our top tips

How good is it to drive in your own car/campervan along the coast or the outback exploring the wonderful Australia? You have to agree it would be even better if it wasn’t for those annoying petrol costs! Check out our hints and tips below on how to save BIG bucks on your petrol costs around Australia.

After all, less money spent on petrol = more beer money.

1. Choose the right day to refuel

One relatively unknown fact is that, generally speaking, if you buy your petrol on a Tuesday you can expect to pay 5% to 15% less than on other days. If a Tuesday isn’t convenient, go on a Wednesday! So if you want to save the pennies tank up on one of those days and definitely avoid the weekends. Plan ahead guys and reap the rewards!

2. Fuel Vouchers

Coles and Woolworths own a majority of the petrol stations and offer discounts on fuel when you shop with them. As long as you spend over $30 (which isn’t hard…) you can receive discounts anywhere between $0.04 cents/litre to $0.12 cents/litre depending on the promotion. It never hurts to sign up for membership with them either – it’s free and you receive regular discount vouchers. That’s pretty exciting. Further information about their discounts can be found here.

3. Get a Fuel Can

Sounds silly however you will get knocked out of your socks when you are heading towards the outback – especially in Western Australia & Northern Territory! Petrol prices can be quite high in those areas so pop some extra fuel into your fuel can before you get there and you can sleep easier knowing you’ve saved yourself some serious $$$.

4. Highway Driving

A lot of our customers have advised us that driving 90 km/h is one of the most economical ways to save on fuel whilst driving on a highway. While we can’t confirm this statement we do advise you to  give it a go next time. We understand that when driving long distances you just want to put your foot down firmly but you could potentially save a bit of money AND make your mother happy by going just a tad bit slower. Win win really.

5. Find travel companions/share a lift

There are so many people that are looking for a “lift”! Talk to people in a hostel, post on notice boards or advertise on websites such a gumtree and many others – its a great way to save on fuel as well as making new friends! It’s the authentic way to backpack, and the way you will make the most and best memories we guarantee! Did someone say “ROADTRIP?!?’
