Sure the flight from Melbourne to Sydney is relatively cheap and quick (around an hour), but it’s only half the fun. If you’re travelling in Australia and really want to see the sights then there’s only one way to travel – so hire a campervan in Melbourne, pack up your bags and let’s go!
This trip takes you inland up the East Coast of Australia and across the state border from Victoria and into New South Wales. This route has some great foodie and cultural destinations on the way. Read on for top tips on places to stop and things to see.
Melbourne to Albury
Stop 1Approx drive time: 3 hours 30 minutes
Distance: 316 km
The city of Albury sits just over the Victorian border in the state of New South Wales. It’s more recently become known as an emerging destination for art and foodie lovers. Visit the brand new modern art gallery MAMA, stretch your legs out along the permanent sculpture walk along the Murray River and stop for lunch at some of the great restaurants Albury has to offer like The River Deck or Mr. Benedict.
If you’re road tripping in a campervan then this might also be a good time to set up camp for the night at one of the local campsites on offer. Make the most that all this city has to offer.
When you leave Albury make sure you lookout for the random submarine in the middle of Holbrook. This bizarre museum makes for a great road trip pic.
Albury to Canberra
Stop 2Approx drive time: 3 hours 45 minutes
Distance: 340 km
From one notable city to another, next stop is Canberra – the nation’s capital. Canberra might not be at the top of your to-do list when you’re in Australia, but there is so much to do here.
For a start it’s home to Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia, Australian War Memorial and the Museum of Australian Democracy. The largest inland city in Australia also has a lot of natural beauty to offer – drive to Lake Burley Griffin, or visit the lookout points at Mount Pleasant and Mount Taylor for beautiful views of the city and surrounding area.
Canberra to Sydney

The drive up to Sydney takes you through the Southern Highlands, an area with lots of little towns and some beautiful National Park scenery – so take this leg of the trip at your own pace and enjoy it. Here are some of the top recommendations for places to stop on the way:
