Snapper Rocks is the place to stop on your way to Byron Bay if you want to hit the waves and ride the world-class surf break here. But, even if surfing isn’t your thing, the coastal walk from Snapper to Greenmount is a nice way of stretching your legs and exploring rock pools along the way. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you grab your camera, as this area is renowned for providing awesome golden-hour photo opportunities.

Just 15 minutes before you arrive in Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads is the perfect final stop. This riverside village is ideal for a swim or paddle, as well as being a great place to grab something to eat, with several heritage pubs and cafes to choose from.

Just two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle is a coastal city with gorgeous beaches, ocean baths, and great food. Nobbys Beach is a great spot for a surf or swim, and the Anzac Memorial Walk gives you some stunning views of the coastline. It’s also the perfect place to fuel up and grab supplies before heading further north.

Another coastal town, Port Macquarie has everything from beautiful beaches to a koala hospital to explore. It’s a favourite stop for wildlife lovers, too, and you can often spot dolphins swimming just off the coast. Don’t forget to stroll the Breakwall Walkway while you’re here, either, which is decorated with hand-painted rocks from visitors all over the world.

Home of the Big Banana, Coffs Harbour is a classic stop on any East Coast road trip. Whether you want to hit the beach, go hiking in the hinterlands, or just snap a selfie with some iconic Aussie kitsch, this spot ticks all the boxes. The surrounding area is also full of rainforest walks and secret waterfalls, so there’s something for every kind of explorer to enjoy.

Often described as a more chilled-out version of Byron, Yamba is the kind of place you stop for lunch and end up staying the night. Known for its fantastic surf breaks, river kayaking, and laid-back vibes, it’s a great place to catch your breath and enjoy a night under the stars at a beachfront campsite before continuing on to Byron Bay.

Just 20 minutes south of Byron Bay, Lennox Head is a haven for surfers and nature lovers. Lake Ainsworth, which a tea tree-stained freshwater lake, is a great spot for a refreshing dip, and the headland walk offers stunning views up and down the coast. It’s the perfect final stop before you roll into Byron.
