3 Tips for driving your campervan around Darwin

Darwin is a great place to take your campervan for a spin. Here are three tips to help you make the most of the experience:

Drive cautiously and be aware of the wildlife.

As much as possible, avoid driving at night or sunrise and sunset. These are the times when animals are most active and you don’t want to hit one. We recommend that you should just spend the night in Darwin. This way, you can be confident that your campervan is safely parked and you can enjoy the city’s nightlife without having to worry about hitting any unwanted critters on the road.

Be prepared for the weather

The weather in Darwin can be extreme, especially during Summer, so make sure you are prepared for both the heat and the wet season. Temperatures can occasionally approach 40 °C (104 °F) but are more likely to be in the mid-30s. Nevertheless, pack accordingly and have a plan B in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Use a Sat Nav/GPS

Even if you are familiar with the area, a satellite navigation system is essential for safe and efficient travel. With this program’s comprehensive navigational capabilities, which include thorough, step-by-step instructions, real-time traffic statistics, and even backup routes, you can rest assured that you will never get lost.

There is no cause for concern if you lack a portable GPS device. The majority of current smartphones include a mapping application by default. For instance, Google Maps is available for free on both iOS and Android devices. Before beginning your campervan journey, you only need to input your starting location and final destination into the program then, you’re good to go!

Some of the events that you might want to consider include:

Darwin Festival
Every year in August, the tropical Top End comes alive with the Darwin Festival, turning the city into a veritable festival wonderland. The dry season in the Top End, also known as the tropical winter, is best experienced during the warm, luminous evenings that characterise this time of year. With balmy outdoor celebrations and a jam-packed schedule of events, Australia’s greatest winter arts festival is sure to be an unforgettable good time for all.

Beer Can Regatta
There is no better way to spend your summer than at the annual Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta! This Darwin tradition dates back to 1974 and invites participants of all ages to employ their creativity by building a floatable vessel from all recyclable materials including; soda and beer cans, plastic bottles, and milk cartons. It’s a great day trip and there are lots of things for the kids to do. There will be sandcastle-building contests, thong-throwing contests, Ironman competitions, and many more beach-themed events throughout the day.

Desert Mob
Desert Mob is a nationally significant event because it provides the most comprehensive survey of modern Aboriginal art created by artists from Desart-member art institutions in the desert regions and communities of the Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia.

Desert Song Festival
The Desert Song Festival is an annual event that celebrates the music, culture, and history of the Aboriginal people of Australia’s red centre. The festival takes place in Alice Springs, which is located in the heart of the Northern Territory. The event features a range of musical performances, dance workshops, and cultural activities. There is also a market stalls selling Aboriginal arts and crafts.

Explore the national parks

Darwin’s idyllic weather and natural beauty make it the perfect place to explore the great outdoors. There are numerous national parks in the Darwin area, each with its own unique attributes.

Litchfield National Park
Take your swimsuit with you and hit the road. Litchfield National Park is two hours away from Darwin. Visit the creepy Magnetic Termite Moulds once you’ve entered Litchfield, and then continue to Tolmer Falls. Litchfield is home to a plethora of stunning waterfalls and swimming pools, which are particularly enjoyable for those who are travelling in the summer.

Kakadu National Park
Kakadu is the largest terrestrial national park in Australia. Home to numerous rare and indigenous plant and animal species, as well as almost one-third of Australia’s bird species! These picturesque places, which feature a variety of breathtaking waterfalls, are perfect for a refreshing dip.

Mary River National Park
Visit the Mary River wetlands to see the Top End’s diverse array of animals, birds, and fish in a miniature ecosystem. Located roughly an hour’s drive east of Darwin, it’s convenient for day trips or as a rest stop en route to Kakadu National Park.

Nitmiluk National Park
Nitmiluk National Park is three hours from Darwin and is a place of spectacular beauty. The centrepiece of this site is Nitmiluk Gorge, a series of 13 canyons surrounded by towering sandstone walls; the vistas here will leave you breathless. Take a sunset cruise, rent a canoe, or if you’re willing to splurge, take a helicopter flight for the greatest observation points. There are various swimming holes and waterfalls to visit, including the famed Edith Falls.

Book around the weather

Darwin is blessed with beautiful weather year-round, so there’s no need to worry about timing your visit around the seasons. However, if you are hoping to catch a specific event, such as the Mindil Beach Sunset Market, it is best to check the schedule in advance and book your tickets accordingly.

The Wet Season (November to April)
Darwin’s wet season is marked by high humidity, monsoonal rainfall, and storms. Temperatures average between 25 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity can exceed 80 percent. January is the wettest month of the rainy season, although many believe it to be the most beautiful season. The combination of sunny days and afternoon storms is ideal for the growth of animals and plants. From October through December is the season for lightning storms, and coastal restaurants and cafes are packed with locals eager to witness the spectacle.

The Dry Season (May to October)
The dry season occurs between May and October. Temperatures vary from 17 to 23 degrees and are marked by warm, sunny, dry days and cold evenings. This is the ideal time to explore Darwin’s more isolated places, which are frequently inaccessible during the wet season.

5 Must-see Destinations in Darwin

Mindil Beach Sunset Market
This market is known for its wonderful array of food and arts, as well as Darwin’s cultural melting pot, which is enhanced by the setting sun. Among the more than two hundred individual booths, you’ll find everything from handmade jewellery to authentic Thai cuisine. It will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable parts of your trip to Darwin if you decide to stop by here.

Florence Falls
The twin cascades of Florence Falls, found inside Litchfield National Park, are a breathtaking sight any time of year, but especially during the summer. One can take in the scenery of the waterfalls before cooling off in the plunge pool, reached by descending 160 steps. The Buley Rockhole, a network of waterfalls and waterholes frequented by wildlife during the rainy season, is located nearby.

Darwin Harbour
A trip to Darwin Harbour is a must if you want to experience the Northern Territories golden hour. Visit the harbour for a final vista before calling it a day of sightseeing in the tropics. Sunsets at Dripstone Cliffs and East Point Reserve are spectacular, and both are great places to enjoy a picnic in the evening.

Crocosaurus Cove
If you’re going to the Top End, don’t you want to see some crocodiles up close and personal? Come to Crocosaurus Cove, where you can see massive crocodiles chowing down, and then grab a fishing rod to help feed the little ones. There are numerous vantage points from which to observe the aquatic life, and those who are feeling very adventurous can even swim alongside crocodiles in the Cage of Death.

Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory
If you’re interested in the history and culture of the Top End, pay a visit to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. The museum covers a wide range of topics, including the history of Aboriginal peoples, the British colonisation of Australia, and the development of Darwin as a city. The art gallery has a rotating selection of exhibitions, many of which feature the work of local Aboriginal artists.
