3 Tips for driving your campervan around Perth

Situated on the west coast of Australia, Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is the fourth most populous city in the country. The city is known for its clear skies, beautiful beaches, and relaxed lifestyle.

If you’re planning to hire a campervan and explore Perth and its surrounds, here are a few tips to help you on your way.

Avoid peak hour traffic

Peak hour traffic in Perth can be a nightmare, so plan your trips around it if you can. Avoid travelling during the morning and afternoon rush hours if possible, and you’ll avoid getting stuck in traffic.

The heaviest traffic occurs during the following times: the Mitchell southbound from 5.45 am to 6.45 am and northbound from 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm, and the Kwinana northbound from 6 am to 7 am and southbound from 3 pm to 4 pm.

Plan your trips in advance and leave plenty of time to get to your destination so you don’t have to rush and can avoid getting caught up in traffic.

Check the weather forecast

The weather in Perth can be notoriously changeable, so it’s important to check the forecast before you set off on your trip. If the weather is looking good, then you can plan to spend your days at the beach or exploring the city. However, if it’s looking like it’s going to be a wet day, then you might want to plan to visit some of the indoor attractions that Perth has to offer.

Some of the best indoor attractions include the Perth Mint, the Western Australian Museum, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Be prepared for the weather and check the forecast before you head off on your trip.

Use a Sat Nav/GPS

Regardless of how familiar you are with the region, having a satellite navigation system is critical for safe and efficient travel. You can take comfort in the knowledge that you will never get lost as a result of this program’s comprehensive set of navigational tools, which include detailed, step-by-step instructions, real-time traffic data, and even backup paths.

If you don’t have a portable GPS unit, there’s no need to worry. The majority of modern smartphones come pre-installed with a mapping application. Google Maps, for instance, is available for free on both iOS and Android devices. All you have to do is enter your starting location and destination into the app before you begin your campervan journey.

Make the most of your Perth campervan rental

Find a good location to stay

The bright metropolis of Perth is the ideal starting point for an exploration of Western Australia. We recommend reserving at least one or two nights in Perth in order to visit the city. Camping sites and caravan parks are abundant in Western Australia, making it possible to spend each night of your journey surrounded by different scenery and allowing you to be flexible with your plan.

If you hire a campervan from Travellers Autobarn, you will receive a 10% discount on camping at any of the 300 Discovery or G’Day campgrounds. We will also assist you in locating free campgrounds in the Perth area.

Book around key events

Perth has a lot to offer all year round, from music festivals to cultural celebrations. If you want to make the most of your trip and experience everything that Perth has to offer, then it’s worth planning your trip around some of the key events that take place in the city.

Some of the events that you might want to consider include:

Margaret River Pro
The Margaret River Pro is one of only two Australian events on the famous World Surf League (WSL) World Championship Tour (CT), and the world’s best professional surfers participate in the event each year, generally in April or May. With giant screens broadcasting replays, expert commentary, food trucks, and merchandise kiosks, the event hub has a festival feel. The best part is that young surfers can get up close and personal with their idols, who take their time after each heat to mingle with groms who line the pathway for autographs and selfies.

Fringe World Festival
Fringe World is a phenomenally popular annual festival held in Perth that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Fringe World’s fantastic assortment of entertainment has something for everyone, including comedy, music and musicals, circus, and much more, and ticket costs are reasonable, allowing you to see numerous shows in one night.

Fremantle Festival
The Fremantle Festival is an annual community festival that takes place over three days and features culture, music, and laughter filling the streets of Fremantle.

Perth Festival
Perth Festival is a non-profit multi-arts festival that delivers world-class activities in performance, music, film, visual arts, and literature to Perth, Western Australia, every summer. As Australia’s longest-running arts event, the Festival has been celebrating Perth, its people, and its culture on the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) for nearly 70 years. Rooted on Noongar Boodjar, it is uniquely positioned to honor the world’s oldest surviving civilisations by embracing rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditions and modern art.

Explore the national parks

Surrounded by majestic forests, wildflower-filled parks, and rugged coastline, Perth is the perfect base for exploring Western Australia’s stunning national parks.

Some of the national parks that you might want to consider visiting include:

Avon Valley National Park
The sweeping Avon Valley plains, white water rapids, and verdant forests can all be found at Avon Valley National Park. Park your campervan in scenic Bald Hill and enjoy canoeing, hiking, and birdwatching in the area.

Nambung National Park
Nambung National Park is well-known for the beautiful beaches at Kangaroo Point and Hangover Bay, as well as for its extensive coastal dune systems and abundance of flora. Aside from being one of Western Australia’s most interesting natural attractions, it’s also only two hours away from Perth. Walk among the thousands of limestone pillars that rise from the yellow sands and you could think you’ve landed on another planet.

Kalamunda National Park
Kalamunda National Park is about 40 minutes from Perth and serves as the gateway to one of the world’s best long-distance hiking trails. It’s also a beautiful place to ride horses, go mountain biking, look at wildflowers, or have a picnic while taking in the sights of the city centre. The Schipp Road Walking Trail and the Rocky Pool Walk are both beautiful and may be completed in a day.

Serpentine National Park
Serpentine National Park is the ideal day trip from Perth, with its stunning waterfalls, a plethora of hiking paths, and natural wildlife. A short drive of only an hour will take you to this national park, where you can witness the famous Serpentine Falls plunging over a granite cliff. There are a wide variety of creatures that make their home here; if you go bird watching, you can see as many as 70 different species of birds, and if you go exploring, you might run into some of the wallabies and kangaroos that also live in the area.

Book around the weather

As mentioned, Perth’s weather is notoriously sunny and dry, but there are still certain times of the year when it’s better to visit than others. Knowing these times will help you book your trip around the weather, ensuring that you have the best possible experience when you visit Perth.

Summer in Perth (December – February)
Summer in Perth is hot and dry, with only a tiny amount of rainfall. The average temperature is between 17 and 30 degrees Celsius. There is a sea breeze in the afternoons that locals call the Fremantle Doctor, owing to its cooling impact.

Autumn in Perth (March-May)
The average temperature is mild, between 13-26 degrees. Occasional showers are to be expected, as well as some humidity in the air.

Winter in Perth (June – August)
Winters are chilly and damp, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 19 degrees Celsius. There are brief but violent storms on occasion, as well as heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Spring in Perth (September – November)
Spring is the perfect time to go explore nature; days are bright and sunny with little rainfall, ranging from pleasant temperatures of 11 – 23 degrees. All around you, plants are beginning to bloom and come to life.

5 Must-see Destinations in Perth

Kings Park and Botanic Garden
Kings Park and Botanic Garden is a tranquil haven close to the centre of the city, with stunning vistas of the Swan River and the Darling Range. As a bonus, it’s one of the world’s largest urban parks. Almost two-thirds of the park’s total area is made up of natural bush, home to a wide variety of native flora and birds. The Western Australian Botanic Garden is an environmental haven that features plants native to Western Australia and other regions with a Mediterranean climate, such as South Africa and California. Some of the highlights are a water garden that depicts a brook in the Darling Range, a tranquil acacia garden, and the Place of Reflection.
