Barrabup Rest Area

Barrabup Rest Area

Barrabup Pool, Margaret River

Accessible to 2WDs, campervans, camper trailers, and big rigs, Barrabup Rest Area is a basic camping area with space for four vehicles. There aren’t any showers or toilets here, but it is dog friendly and you’ll also find a few picnic tables and rubbish bins scattered around for your convenience.

Unlike many rest areas, Barrabup doesn’t have a time limit, which makes it a good place to pull up if you’re looking to rest for a few days. There’s a peaceful atmosphere here, too, and you’re in close access to several walking trails, some of which take you through native forests, where you’ll find an abundance of wildlife spotting and birdwatching opportunities.

Capel RV Stop

Capel RV Stop

Capel, Margaret River

Don’t be put off by the name of this free camping spot, as Capel RV Stop is also suitable for 2WDs, campervans, and camper trailers. It does have a 24 hour time limit, but with a total of three dedicated sites, it’s a good option if you’re concerned about availability or looking for somewhere to camp for a single night before heading back out on the road.

Another great thing about Capel RV Stop is that you’re only 10 minutes away from Capel Main Street, where you’ll find a supermarket, which is ideal for restocking all your essentials. However, there aren’t any onsite amenities but there is a dump point nearby at Buchanan Road and you’re close to a dog park with a creek.

Willow Springs (Davies Camp)
Willow Springs

Gold Gully Road, Margaret River

Accessible to camper trailers, 4WDs, and 2WDS, Willow Springs (Davies Camp) is one of the most peaceful free camping spots near Margaret River. It’ll take just over an hour to get here, but it’s worth it not only for the free camping opportunity but for the forest-based location.

There is a toilet here as well as several picnic tables, but one of the best facilities is the fresh water tank which you’re welcome to use free of charge. Don’t expect to get any phone service here, but that’s not what camping is about, and this, mixed with easy access to the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail mean you’re given the opportunity to explore the great outdoors with no interruptions!

Dardanup Hall Car Park

Dardanup, Margaret River

If you’re looking for a free camping spot that has a ton of amenities to take advantage of, you can’t go wrong with Dardanup Hall Car Park. Here, you’ll find toilets, drinking water, and dog friendly access. The only thing it lacks is a shower, but if you’re willing to go without for a day, it’s definitely worth stopping at.

This free camping spot is accessible to 2WDs, caravans, camper trailers, and 4WDs, but you do need to keep the time limit here in mind, and you’re welcome to stay for up to 24 hours within any six consecutive days. Also, while the amenities here are good, there are only three spaces, so we recommend getting here early to avoid disappointment.

  • Dog Friendly Access

Single Camp Spot

Single Camp Spot

Mas Road, Margaret River

Sometimes, you just need a convenient place to pull in for the night after a long day on the road, that’s close to the highway. Single Camp Spot is ideal for this, and it’s accessible for most vehicles, including 2WDs, campervans, and camper trailers.

There are some basic amenities to take advantage of here, including a drop toilet. However, one thing to keep in mind is that its roadside location does mean there’s a chance you’ll hear a lot of road noise throughout the night, so while it’s convenient, it may not be the best place to spend more than a single evening, especially if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway.

Brockman/Stewart Rest Area

Brockman Rest Area

Brockman Highway, Margaret River

Another great free campsite for anyone making their way along the Brockman Highway, this rest area has a time limit of 24 hours and is suitable for 2WDs, 4WDs, campervans, and camper trailers. There’s also wheelchair access here, as well as a toilet and picnic tables, but you do need to keep in mind that tent camping is not allowed.

Despite being so easily accessible from the highway, this rest area is set further back from the road than Single Camp Spot, so it’s a bit more peaceful. It’s also dog friendly, and there are some excellent walking trails nearby, so it’s ideal if you’re looking to break free from your vehicle and stretch your legs with your canine companion by your side.

The amenities here are limited toilets, picnic tables, and rubbish bins, but with a 24 hour time limit this should be enough to get by on until you reach your next destination. This is also a wonderful spot to camp for free if you want to take the famous Bibbulmun Track, which itself, offers incredible views across Western Australia and some excellent wildlife spotting opportunities.
