Suitable for campervans, camper trailers, RVs, and tent camping, The Pines Camp Area is one of many free sites you’ll find within Olney State Forest. It’s also one of the most picturesque, and as its name suggests, you’ll be surrounded by towering pine trees that aren’t only beautiful but will offer shade and rain protection when needed.

There are loads of fantastic walking tracks to discover that start from The Pines Campground, including the famous Abbot Falls walking trail, and since this site is dog friendly, both you and your furry friend can enjoy exploring the surroundings together.

Turpentine Camping Area

Olney State Forest, Central Coast

Easily accessible for campervans, camper trailers, and 4WDs, the Turpentine Camping Area is located within Olney State Forest and offers a peaceful place to spend the night surrounded by pine and oak trees. This also makes it a wonderful place to enjoy birdwatching and wildlife spotting, as well as offering some excellent walking tracks.

The entire site is dog friendly, although your canine companion will need to be kept on a lead at all times. There are some really good amenities to take advantage of here, too, including toilets and picnic tables at the nearby Pines Camping Area, and you’re also allowed to have a fire in the designated areas as long as you bring your own firewood.

The Basin Campground

The Basin Campground

Olney State Forest, Central Coast

Another free camping site set within Olney State Forest, The Basin Campground is further away from The Pines Camping Area and has more open spaces than the Turpentine Camping Area. It also isn’t as busy as the first two on our list, which doesn’t only mean you may find it easier to grab a space here, but you’ll get more peace and quiet.

Campervans, RVs, and camper trailers can easily access this free camping spot via the well-maintained roads, and it’s also another dog friendly spot that is surrounded by walking trails both you and your pooch pal will love exploring. You’re also close to Wollombi Brook Creek here, so it’s ideal if you want to enjoy a spot of fishing or swimming.

It’s also one of the easiest free camping spots to find and access, as it is situated right along Watagan Forest Road.

As with most of the camping spots located within Olney State Forest there are plenty of walking tracks to explore, which you are allowed to do with your dog, and you can end the day by gathering around a fire pit. You’re also allowed to to collect firewood from the surrounding forest here, so it’s a good spot if you haven’t bought your own with you.

Watagan HQ Camping Area

Watagan HQ Camping Area

Heaton State Forest, Central Coast

Watagan HQ Camping Area is also easy to find and access as, like Olney HQ Campground, it’s set right along Watagan Forest Road. However, it is located within a different state forest, this time Heaton, so it’s a good choice if you feel you’ve exhausted everything Olney State Forest has to offer.

Campervans, RVs, and camper trailers are welcome here, and because it has such a good variety of facilities on offer, it’s also a good place to camp for free in a tent. As well as walking tracks, there’s an interesting history to explore here, as the site was once a camp for workers who built the forest roads, and there is information detailing this scattered around the camp.

The spaces here are open and grassy, too, so they’re great for playing a ball game with your family or relaxing in the sunshine, and when you’re ready to explore a little more, you can head into the surrounding forest that is packed with native flora and fauna.

Despite being so open, you’re also offered a good amount of shade from the surrounding trees, which also mark the start of multiple walking tracks leading to waterfalls and swimming holes.

Unfortunately, Casuarina Camping Area is not dog friendly, so you’ll need to find somewhere else to call home if you’ve bought your dog on holiday with you. This is also one of the best-loved spots for birdwatching in Central Coast, so it’s ideal for any animal lover to spend the day before settling down under the starry night sky. As there is so much wildlife here, this campsite isn’t dog friendly, but it does boast some good amenities, including toilets.

Gap Creek Campground

Watagans National Park, Central Coast

Despite being so small, this campground is one of the best for facilities, and you’ll find toilets, showers, and even a playground for kids to enjoy here. FAQs about free camping in Central Coast

Yes, free camping is allowed on the Central Coast, mostly within designated areas in state and national forests. Places like Olney and Heaton State Forests offer a good mix of free campgrounds where you can park a campervan or set up a tent legally. You won’t find many options in built-up coastal towns, but the forest sites are scenic, peaceful, and well-equipped.

No, sleeping in your campervan on public streets or in town areas is not permitted and can result in a fine. Instead, head to places like The Pines, Olney HQ or Watagan HQ Campgrounds—these are accessible for campervans, free to stay at, and surrounded by nature, making for a much more enjoyable experience.

Most free camping areas on the Central Coast allow stays of up to 24 hours, although enforcement may vary depending on the location. Sites like The Basin and Casuarina are more remote and may offer a bit more flexibility, but it’s always safest to stick to the guidelines on any posted signs at the site.

Facilities vary between sites, but generally, you can expect toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits. Some places, like Casuarina Camping Area, even offer cold showers and BBQ facilities, while Gap Creek includes a playground and is wheelchair friendly. Drinking water isn’t always available, so it’s best to bring your own supply. We recommend checking out the different sites online so you can be prepared.

Yes, each campsite has its own rules, but common ones include no loud noises at night, keeping fires in designated pits, and cleaning up after yourself. Dogs are welcome at many sites like The Pines and Turpentine Camping Area, but must be kept on a lead. Others, like Casuarina and Gentlemens Halt, are not dog-friendly due to local wildlife. The best thing you can do is do research before getting to the site and paying careful attention to the signage.

Fires are allowed in designated fire pits at most sites, such as Olney HQ and The Basin, but only outside of fire ban season. Some spots, like Casuarina, have BBQ facilities as an alternative. If you’re planning to light a fire, make sure you bring your own wood unless the site specifically allows you to collect it.

Yes, many free campsites in the region are great for families. We recommend comparing different sites first so you can see which ones will be best for your family. Gap Creek Campground has a playground and good space for children, while open sites like Watagan HQ and The Basin offer room to play and explore.

Most sites do not offer drinking water, though some, like The Basin and Casuarina, have non-drinking water for washing. You’ll need to bring your own clean water supply, especially if you’re staying longer or planning to cook and clean at your campsite.

No bookings are required at the free campsites across the Central Coast—they operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Popular sites like Gap Creek fill up fast due to their size, so plan to arrive early if you’re camping over the weekend or during school holidays.

You’ll want to bring all the basics: clean water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, a first aid kit, cooking gear, a good torch, and extra firewood. Many sites have minimal lighting and no power, so come prepared to be self-sufficient and bring along your own source of power.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons to go camping in the Central Coast area. The temperatures are mild, the walking trails are more enjoyable, and there’s less chance of heavy rain. Summer can be hot and crowded, and winter nights can get cold, especially inland in the forests.
