Toowoomba Free Camping Spots
- Aubigny Hotel
- James Norman Hedges Park
- Hampton Visitor Information Centre
- Pioneer Hotel Kulpi
- Lake Clarendon Rest Area
Each of the camping spots listed above offers a free place to pull up and spend a night or two. However, it’s important to note that these are best visited by campervan, especially since some are in otherwise hard-to-reach places. To learn more about hiring a campervan for your road trip, contact Traveller Autobarn, and we’ll match you with the perfect vehicle for your needs.
Aubigny Hotel
Aubigny, QLD
We know what you’re thinking – how can a hotel be a free camping spot? Well, technically, you’re not staying in the hotel, but in the grounds of the carpark, which has designated spaces laid out for campers to spend the night free of charge. Could there be anything better than spending the evening socialising over a few cold beers and being within feet of your campsite? We don’t think so!
Aside from the opportunity to socialise with fellow campers and stay in a pretty unique spot, you’ll have access to some of the hotel’s amenities while you’re here, including toilets and showers. However, you will need to check with staff about shower availability when you arrive, as this can vary depending on how full the hotel rooms are.
While you’re here, you can take a short day trip to the Australian Army Flying Museum, where you’ll find exhibits on Australia’s military aviation history. Or, if you’d prefer to get out in nature, you’ll be close to Oakey Creek, which is the start of some awesome bushwalking trails.

James Norman Hedges Park
Helidon Spa, QLD
If you’d prefer to stay in a quieter, natural setting, James Norman Hedges Park is an excellent choice. It’s a little further away from Toowoomba (about a 20-minute drive), but it’s worth the extra time on the road for a chance to camp in a peaceful spot surrounded by trees and birdlife.
You’ll find basic facilities here, including toilets, picnic tables, and barbecue facilities, which are particularly good for families. Just keep in mind that there is a “Leave No Trace” rule in place here, so you’ll need to take all of your rubbish with you when you leave. It’s also a dog-friendly site, but you’ll need to keep your furry friend on a leash at all times to protect the local wildlife.
As well as the chance to relax in nature, you’ll be close to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, where you can enjoy some scenic walks, cycling paths, and even horse riding trails. Along the way, there are old railway tracks and historic sites to discover, adding to the interest and giving you a glimpse into Queensland’s fascinating history.

Hampton Visitor Information Centre
Hampton, QLD
Believe it or not, Hampton Visitor Information Centre is not only a resource hub but also a fantastic free camping location! The surrounding carpark has designated spaces where you can pull up in a campervan for a couple of nights and use it as a base to explore the area, and with the centre right at your doorstep, this really is a no-brainer if you’re keen on exploring the area to its fullest!
It is designed for short-term stays, so don’t plan to make this a long-term base. However, you will have access to toilets and picnic tables while you are here, which add to the comfort levels. Just keep in mind that there is limited space, and it can be pretty busy during the summer tourist season, so arrive early if you’d like to grab a spot.
Once you’re parked and ready to explore, you’ll find yourself close to Ravensbourne National Park – a stunning area filled with rainforest walks, picnic spots, and birdwatching opportunities. The Gus Beutel Lookout is a very popular spot here, too, and you’ll be treated to panoramic views across the Lockyer Valley. And, if you’re visiting in May, you can check out the Hampton Festival, where you’ll find a variety of local produce, arts, and crafts on offer.

Pioneer Hotel Kulpi
Kulpi, QLD
This is another pub campsite option, but it’s important to note that the Pioneer Hotel Kulpi only offers free camping to its patrons. So, you’ll need to have a meal or spend a couple of hours drinking here to stay for free, but this really isn’t the worst thing in the world, is it? And the payoff isn’t only free camping but the chance to soak up the friendly, small-town atmosphere of rural Queensland.
Along with excellent food and drink, you’ll have easy access to the hotel’s public toilets, and while the facilities are basic, they’re enough to ensure a comfortable night’s stay. Also, the locals are always up for chat, so it’s a great place to meet new people and learn more about the area.
Close by, you’ll find the town of Quinalow, which is home to a beautiful creek where you can spend the afternoon picnicking or strolling along the banks. You’re also not too far from the Bunya Mountains, which are famous for their ancient bunya pines, wildlife, and excellent hiking trails. And, while it’s a bit of a drive away, it’s definitely worth the trip for the experience.

Lake Clarendon Rest Area
Lake Clarendon, QLD
If your idea of heaven is waterside camping (without the fee), head straight to Lake Clarendon Rest Area. Both caravans and self-contained vehicles are welcome here, and you’ll be able to enjoy a peaceful environment by the lake where you can relax and unwind.
The amenities are basic, but that’s all part of the appeal. You’ll find eco-toilets (with ramps), picnic tables, and BBQs that you can use without charge. It’s also a pet-friendly site, and as long as you keep your dog on a leash at all times, you can explore the area with your trusty canine companion!
Even though you’re right by the lake, swimming or boating here isn’t encouraged as the water quality can vary, but the surrounding area is ideal for walks and picnics. This is also a wonderful place for photographers to visit and snap some incredible shots, and the dark skies at night make it a particularly good choice if you’re into astrophotography. You’ll be near the town of Gatton, too, where you can enjoy some hustle and bustle and find a range of attractions to keep you entertained, including the Gatton and District Historical Village and the Queensland Transport Museum.
