Travel tips for your campervan holiday in Sydney

Sydney, the state capital of New South Wales, is the largest city in Australia, with a population of over 5 million. This huge metropolis was developed around a stunning natural harbour and is home to the famed Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House.

Throughout the year, Sydney’s dynamic environment and major tourist sites draw crowds, causing traffic congestion.

To prevent being stranded in a traffic jam while driving your campervan around Sydney, we recommend the following tips!

START YOUR TRIP OUTSIDE OF PEAK TRAFFIC HOURS

Knowing Sydney’s traffic patterns is essential to avoid wasting time sitting in your campervan.

Most Sydneysiders commute to work between 7 am, and 9 am and 4 pm and 7 pm on weekdays. If you can start your journey before or after these times, you’ll avoid the worst of the traffic.

Keep in mind that many schools start at 9 am, so there is increased traffic on the roads from 8 am to 9 am during the weekdays. Generally, the best time to drive in Sydney is between 10 am and 3 pm on weekdays. On weekends, the traffic is lighter but still busy in some areas, such as around popular tourist destinations.

ELECTRONIC TAG ACCOUNT TO PAY FOR TOLLS

Sydney’s numerous road networks include the renowned Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, and a variety of motorways that ring the city. Private operators own and maintain all highways, so their use is subject to a fee. Sydney’s toll roads consist of the M2, M4, M5, and M7, Eastern Distributor, Lane Cove Tunnel, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, and Cross City Tunnel.

We at Travellers Autobarn will explain to you on pick-up on how we handle toll roads & charges to avoid any financial surprises for our customers.

USE A SAT NAV/GPS

Wherever you are coming from, and however long you have been driving, a sat nav or GPS is an invaluable tool when travelling in an unfamiliar city. This tool guarantees you will never get lost, as you can input your destination, and the system will guide you there.

Google Maps is a free app that can be used as a GPS and is available on Android and iOS devices. Once you have downloaded the app, input your destination and follow the directions.

Mardi Gras
The historic Mardi Gras parade, an annual celebration of LGBTQ culture and community, takes over the city. Oxford Street is the location of the colourful and triumphant march.

Sculpture by the Sea
Sculpture by the Sea is held annually during October and November. This event, which transforms the renowned Bondi to Tamarama beach walk into an epic outdoor sculpture show, is a must-see if you’re in the area at this time.

EXPLORE THE NATIONAL PARKS

Sydney is home to several national parks, each with its unique character and offerings.

Blue Mountains National Park
From the Echo Point lookout in Katoomba, admire the Three Sisters rock formation in the Blue Mountains. This is the starting point for several of the walking trails in this national park. The Blue Mountains are so named because eucalyptus forests produce a natural blue haze. This wilderness area is a must-see on every road journey from Sydney.

Royal National Park
The Royal National Park is the oldest national park in Australia and the second oldest in the world. Royal National Park will transport you to a haven filled with natural beauty, including pristine beaches, spectacular rainforests, Aboriginal monuments, and an abundance of wildlife.

Morton National Park
A visit to Morton National Park will immerse you in unspoiled wilderness, steep gorges, breathtaking waterfalls, and a plethora of epic hiking trails. This wilderness and bushwalking paradise is within a stone’s throw from Sydney and is home to the famed Fitzroy Falls, which should not be left off your itinerary.

BOOK AROUND THE WEATHER

One of the best things about visiting Sydney is that it is beautiful year-round. There’s always something to do and see, no matter what the weather’s like. The weather in Sydney is ideal for enjoying the outdoors, with pleasant summers and temperate winters.

Summer in Sydney (December – February)
During the summer months, the city experiences its heaviest rainfall, which can bring thunderstorms and even rare floods, with typical temperatures ranging from 21 to 30 degrees.

Autumn in Sydney (March-May)

Winter in Sydney (June – August)
Sydney’s winters are usually dry and warm, with temperatures ranging between 11 and 21 degrees. The mornings could be cold, but the evenings seldom drop below 9 degrees.

Spring in Sydney (September – November)

Sydney Harbour Bridge
Famed iconic structure and one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks. In addition to being the world’s largest steel arch bridge, it spans one of the world’s best natural harbours. Locals affectionately refer to it as the Coathanger, and it is an integral feature of the city; you can stroll or cycle across it and even reach its pinnacle for breathtaking sights.

Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is an architectural gem of the 20th century. Its significance derives from its unrivalled design and construction, its extraordinary engineering achievements and technological innovation, and its status as a globally renowned architectural symbol.

Bondi Beach
Known for its 1km strip of white sand and crashing waves, Bondi is one of Australia’s most iconic beaches. The beach is a great place to surf, sunbathe, people watch, and swim. Its proximity to world-class restaurants and Sydney CBD, and safe swimming conditions make it a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

Manly Beach
Manly Beach, Australia, is well-known for hosting the inaugural international surfing competition in 1964. The coastline arcs from South Steyne to North Steyne and Queenscliff, where waves generated by a bombora (a submerged reef) attract some of the world’s top surfers.

Paddington Reservoir Gardens
This underground garden is among the best-kept secrets in Sydney. Padding Reservoir was the source of the city’s water supply until 1899 when a more efficient system was installed. The unused reservoir has been turned into a beautiful garden that is ideal for relaxing in a calm urban oasis. Spend some time perusing the grounds before strolling the neighbouring Oxford Street shopping district.
